About Basmati Rice

Basmati, known as the “Queen of Fragrance” in Hindi, is a long-grain aromatic rice grown for centuries at the Himalayan foothills. Indian Basmati is traditionally considered premium, with its extra-long slender grains, rich aroma, and delicate flavor.

  • Colour: Translucent creamy white, also available in brown variety.
  • Grain: Long (6.61 – 7.5 mm) or very long (> 7.5 mm, 2 mm breadth).
  • Shape: Long slender, distinct length-to-width ratio.
  • Texture: Dry, firm, separate, non-sticky after cooking.
  • Elongation: Grains elongate 70–120% when cooked, soft & fluffy.
  • Flavour: Distinctive aroma from 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline & other compounds.
  • Uses: Complements curries, biryani, pilau, and Middle Eastern dishes.

Main notified varieties include Basmati 1509, Sharbati, 386, 217, Ranbir, Karnal Local (Taraori), 370, Type-3 (Dehradooni), Pusa Basmati-1, Pusa 1121, Punjab Basmati-1, Haryana Basmati-1, Kasturi and Mahi Sugandha. 1121 Basmati Rice is globally renowned for its flavor, aroma, long grain, and non-sticky texture.

Areas of Cultivation

Basmati rice is cultivated in states like Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttarakhand, Western Uttar Pradesh, and parts of Madhya Pradesh.
